This page is dedicated to my movie picks.

5/16/2006 - Brotherhood of the Wolf. This pick is a fantastic action-horror-thriller that has a lot of great twists.  Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of those movies that is well paced and a real edge of your chair kind of movie.  A nice addition is this is a true story from long ago and puts their own "how it happened" story behind it.  The creature that actually did kill over 100 people in a couple years in France around 1766 and was known as the Beast of Gevaudan.  This movie is clearly fiction, but still a great take on an exciting true story.  I don't want to give too much away so I will leave you with a movie pick that I think is one of the best in its genre.

2/15/2006 - Grizzly Man is an incredible documentary about a man that spends 13 years with grizzlies filming them in the wild up close (way too close).  The interesting part is that it is a documentary from another film maker using the footage shot by "The Grizzly Man".  I don't want to spoil the documentary by giving it all away, but lets just say the guy with grizzlies is crazy and it comes back to bite him quite literally.  One of my favorite documentary.

10/28/2005 - Layer Cake is a great movie that will keep you on the end of your seat till the end.  I don't want to say too much about this movie since it might ruin plot  for you, but if you like Guy Ritchie style movies (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch) then you will probably love this one.  It is a bit rough so I wouldn't let the kiddies anywhere near this movie.

8/18/2005 - The Descent is one of the best horror movies I have seen in a while.  I won't ruin any of the movie, but I can say it involves a group of women getting lost in a cave and then possibly running into some bad critters.  Very good movie if you are into horror.  Let me know what you think of the ending... took me a couple minutes to figure it all out and I love it when a movie ends like that.

5/12/2005 - Musa: The Warrior.  I haven't seen many movies recently, but I have been watching foreign flics when I can.  I managed to run across a great movie called Musa - The Warrior.  This is definitely a top movie and I HIGHLY recommend watching it.  It does have subtitles, but for any real movie buff this shouldn't be a big deal.  I don't know how a movie this good flew under my radar so long, but fortunately I got lucky and ran across it.  Great story that has an epic feel, one of Asia's best movies and while not Braveheart good it is in the same great company.

1/30/2005 - Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.  This movie is a recent DVD that really deserves a look if you are into any kind of behind the scenes documentary type films or reality shows.  Metallica: Some Kind of Monster is incredible.  I am a fan of Metallica, but that isn't the attraction to the film.  The raw behind the scenes access to a historic metal band's therapy and music sessions is completely unscripted and really shows insight into not only a band, but a group of people that work closely together and the baggage that is generated from their long association.  Words can't do this documentary justice.  It does start off slow, but the result at the end is so satisfying that I feel like I was a voyeur to someone's life and not just watching a film.  Truly incredible and puts to shame anything VH1 Behind the Music series has done.  Talk about surreal life... I give this a definite thumbs up.

12/15/2004 - Gung Ho.  In the 80s, everyone was worried about the Japanese taking over.  In fact, they bailed us out of the entire junk bond situation, took a bath on the real estate bomb and they pumped a ton of money into our economy.  I am not for outsourcing, but don't know how we can avoid it either.  Maybe like the Japanese situation of the 80s things will end up just fine for everyone.  Anyway, Gung Ho is an interesting look at our work force and a nice feel good movie to boot.  Hope you enjoy it.

07/26/2004 - Frailty.  Not sure exactly how to describe it... thriller, horror, suspense.  In some ways it falls into all of those categories.  At any rate, this movie is really good and a very refreshing change of pace.  Serial killer movies are generally entertaining, but this one has some extra special flavor.  Watch it.  I doubt you will be disappointed.

06/20/2004 - City of God.  A wonderful movie that chronicles the life of a boy in Rio De Janeiro.  This incredible tale is based on a true story and the experience just has to be seen.  With a great tale of morality told through the eyes of an insider, this movie shows a moving account of poverty, gangsters, power, and greed.  Nothing is glorified in this picture.  The rawness of the footage sets a mood that makes you feel like you are watching a story unfold in the eyes of those who lived it.  This is truly great cinema and shouldn't be missed.

06/17/2004 - Coupling Seasons 1-3 I hate to add another non-movie to the movie picks, but this is one of the few great shows deserving enough to be here.  If you haven't been keeping up on the BBC, you will have missed what I consider to be the funniest TV comedy ever.  It is called Coupling and it is extremely comical.  Pretty much everything revolves around relationships and sex so it isn't for the children or prudes, but if you like adult humor you absolutely can't go wrong with Coupling.  Get seasons 1-3 on DVD as soon as possible.  They are worth their weight in gold... and then some.

05/28/2003 - Equilibrium Seen the Matrix and want more?  This pick will satisfy you.  Equilibrium is a great low budget Matrix type flic.  Gunkata is very cool and the hero is... well... an uber badass.  If nothing else, see this movie for the ending.  Some nice twists in the plot and some great action scenes.  Another wonderful comic book movie.

05/26/2003 - Secretary This movie IS NOT for most people.  However if you like a little excitement in life and always wondered what top or bottoming was in a sexual connotation, check the movie out.  I personally enjoyed it immensely, but hey we all know I am a freak.

05/06/2003 - Angel Season 1 DVD OK sure it isn't a movie and is based off of the cheesy Buffy TV series, but hey it kicks serious butt.  The new Angel season is iffy at best, but if you want good TV that crosses into just plain fun check out this DVD.  Trust me you won't be disappointed.

04/15/2003 - Kissing Jessica Stein.  This movie is a smart and clever comedy.  Don't expect anything great out of this chic flic, but if you like a light hearted romp through the eyes of a woman trying on lesbianism for the first time... well... this would be the flic.  It has a nice sexy edge to it without turning into light porn or a drama that gets all preachy.

01/16/2003 - Forbidden Planet.  In my book, it is one of the great Sci-Fi movies of all time.  It was first shown in 1956, but don't let that dissuade you from a great movie (movies pre 70s usually scare me right off).  The movie is surprisingly up-to-date and has a great story to tell.  Not to mention it is one of the grand father of Sci-Fi movies.

10/21/2002 - True Romance. For those wise enough to read my mini-bio, this is no surprise.  For the rest of you, this is one of my all time favorite moves.  It is violent and deserves its rated R rating.  So what is there to love in this movie you ask.  Just for background, you have Brad Pitt as a stoner, Val Kimmer as dead Elvis, Dennis Hopper with the funniest Sicily dialog ever spouted on film, Gary Oldman as a white pimp who thinks he is black, Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) playing a bad ass that just isn't bad enough, Christopher Walken as an Sicilian at the end of  Hoppers rant, and that is just the supporting cast.  Written by Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott.  If you like action, dialog, and just a really great messed up story.  This one is for you!

09/15/2002 - Whipped.  I love this movie.  It is one of those really low budget character films that went mostly unnoticed by critics and movie goers.  The story revolves around four typical or rather stereotypical guys and the woman that turns the tables on them.  Whether you are married or single, there will be a lot of this movie you will identify with and more you will laugh with.  Great movie.

08/15/2002 - 100 Girls.  This movie is sort of a "Teen Flick", but it has a lot going for it including excellent story, well done visuals, and is offbeat enough to keep you interested without going over the top.  Good romantic comedy, but it does have some juvenile scenes.

08/07/2002 - Ninja Scroll will be this update pick.  For those who have seen this Anime movie, you know it is probably the best action Anime ever produced.  For those who haven't seen this movie, you are missing one of my all time favorite movies.  Not all time Anime favorites, but ALL TIME favorites.  Very gory, excellent characters, great story, kick ass action, and the pace of the movie is fast.  The only downside to this movie is that it has some "rough" scenes and I would highly recommend not letting the kiddies see it.  Go check this one out now whether you have seen it or not.  It is just that good.

07/29/2002 - A Shock to the System is my movie pick this time round.  The premise is a kind of what if.  The what if is:  What if you killed someone accidentally, no one found out, and it didn't bother you?  What if you hated your wife, hated your job, and suddenly realized you could get ahead by getting away with murder?  Michael Caine does a wonderful job with this character.  This movie might be a hard one to locate, but if you find it pick it up for a view.  I doubt you will be disappointed.

07/20/2002 - Boondock Saints is my movie pick for this update.  I can't explain a movie this engaging.  The characters are quirky and unpredictable.  The story is well done and the movie has a great style to it.  I love the scenes where the detective figures out what happened then what actually happens is shown.  Has a pulp fiction feel to it.  Starts a little slow, but ends with a "that was a really good movie" feel.

07/04/2002 - Tremors is this update pick.  It is a B movie horror pick that takes us back to the good old horror days when a movie was both scary and fun.  This could be one of Bacon's finest performances (not that there are a whole lot of them).  If you are looking for a good Saturday night flic to watch with your girlfriend this one will give her a reason to snuggle up with you and have a good ole time.

06/14/2002 - This pick is SOLID!  Normally I don't promote flicks in the movie theater, but I just have to give a big thumbs up to Undercover Brother.  Just what the African-American film community needed.  A very funny and sometimes scathing look into our culture from an African-American perspective.  On its own it is a riot, but this film will likely be one of the best satires this year and for that matter one of the best ever.

06/03/2002 - It has been a while since web page updates have been more important.  However, I have returned with a real gem.  Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker is a great American anime movie.  It has action, intrigue, keeps you guessing, and lots of people getting their butts kicked.  All in all, very entertaining.  The "Uncut" version is not for kids IMO.  It has a lot of people getting killed in mass explosions.  Doesn't really show anything too much, but it is fairly violent.

05/06/2002 - Spiderman!  Sure there is nothing special about recommending one of the best movies I have seen in a long while, but you have to see this flick. Great action movie with everything a comic book movie should have. Congrats to Sam Raimi... now go see the movie.
